Nanny Cams: Spy games and what not

Nanny cams are quite the hot topic! They can be a great tool to provide insight into your child's time with their nanny. However there's often a lot of controversy regarding its use. Here are the top 4 questions we receive regarding nanny cams.

1. Is it legal?
Yes! It's legal to have a camera in your own home. However it is illegal to record someone in what are considered private areas (i.e., bathrooms or in the case of a live-in, their living quarters). It is best to keep them in common areas of the home.

2. Do you have to tell the nanny?
No. You don't have to let your nanny know that there are cams in the home. That said, for many nannies employed over 6 months, finding out after the fact can breed trust issues....in the nanny-not the parent.

3. What are the benefits?
It can provide an added layer of security and comfort for you when you are away from your child.

4. Are there any down sides?
Possibly. For many, recording others without their knowledge, is seen as a moral and ethical dilemma. This can be avoided by letting the nanny know that there are nanny cams in the home but not revealing the quantity or location.

In closing, remember that nanny cams can be a great asset. But take care not to allow them to replace good 'ol fashioned communication. Take a moment every day to talk with your nanny. At the end of the day, building trust takes time. If you start with phenomenal nanny candidates on the front end (E-Nanny...clears throat....shameless plug, i know) your nanny cams will be an added benefit, not a necessity.
